I've always shied away from the "experts", and now twitter seems to be getting top-heavy with "SM experts". If I could only do three of the things you mention to filter out the real from the fake, they would be:

One; would I want to introduce the "expert" to my clients? that would take care of about 90% :-)

Two; are they willing to help 'educate' new people, so vital in a corporate setting, with new technologies and new media? Well, I've received some interesting brush-offs so far from the "experts" on twitter; though admittedly it was when I was really starting out and didn't have my feathers smoothed just right!

3. Can they play as a team, collaborate with other "experts"?
It's very obvious to me on twitter who plays and who plays!

Yours is a post I will be passing along. In a former career I consulted with early stage companies, and I am still being asked whom to recommend.

I look forward to your next WEB SAVVY PR!

Thanks for the comment. I know the subject has been done before, but wanted to take a stab at clarifying my perspective on it. I should also give some credit to one of my clients who answered a similar question on twitter.com a week or so ago - that was in the back of my mind as I wrote the post. That "Marketing implies paying customers" - not just followers/connections/friends - Thanks @GetResults & @Figliuolo
