One update: this last tweet of the hour, or at end of the day, is even ore important since Twitter now shows your last tweet on the page of other's "Followers" list . For example, if I follow three people, then sign off twitter by tweeting "I'm off to lunch." then those three people, who are eating lunch at their desks, check their new twitter "followers" page to decide whether or not they are going to follow me back. They may or may not. However, If I had tweeted a link to a useful blog post, great PR tip, or useful free tool, they would be much more likely to follow.

So If you are going to sign off for the morning, or at the end of the day, feel free to say "goodnight folks," but follow that up with on last tweet that will attract the kind of people you want to interact with and build community.

I agree Cathy. I've been conscious lately of trying to not to log off with a reply to another member of my community.
Since this is not always possible, I also attempt to phrase my replies in a way that a person who comes upon my profile for the 1st time may follow along with the conversation or gain some value from it.

That is a really valid point that I have never considered before. I use social media so much that I don't stop to think of the last message that I leave before I go to bed or head off to an appointment. It makes sense to think about that. Thanks for sharing such wonderful insight!
